The increase in the number of patients seeking more esthetic restorative treatments. This has led to a sharp increase in composite resin restorations compared to the amalgam restorations that were quite common in the olden days. In a day when composite resin restorations have probably replaced the use of amalgam as a restorative material, there is a necessity for stronger bonding properties of composite resins. Research into this matter had let to various techniques to improve the bond strength at the tooth-restoration interface. In addition to improvements made in the bonding agents, light cure units have been improved to ensure adequate polymerization of the composite resin material. The factors such as intensity of the light, exposure time, and wavelength as related to the type of photoinitiator used in the composite resin material, affect the rate and depth of polymerization. Few studies have concluded that almost 37% of composite restorations are insufficiently polymerized, owing to a lower intensity of light from the light cure unit. Thus, there is a need for high-quality curing units to enhance the overall restoration.
Three international studies were conducted to measure the intensities of light cure units used by dentists. It was concluded that about 33% to 48% of the lights used in clinics were found to use light-curing units with intensities lesser than 300mW/cm2.
